About Us Occupying an entire city block in Downtown, the Richard B. Russell Federal Building & U.S. Courthouse was built in 1978. The space is occupied by the District and Magistrate Courts, U.S. Probation, U.S. Pretrial Service, U.S. Attorney, U.S. Marshal Service, Public Defender, Senate offices, and other Federal agencies.
About Our Project GSA turned to Gensler when it came to the renovation of the 2.5 million square foot Richard B. Russell US Courthouse and Federal building. We reviewed the functional requirements of the project and realized that new security regulations were going to make an already poor entry sequence even worse. When we learned that additional funds were available for security upgrades, we proposed that they re-think the entry sequence and public areas to make them more welcoming, while bringing the building up to current security standards. We developed an innovative solution to reposition this 1970s office tower: move the existing entry and security sequence from inside the building by adding a dramatic, light-filled pavilion in the building’s previously barren front plaza. We utilized money set aside for security upgrades to build the new structure. By moving all the security into a separate, blast resistant addition, we improved the blast resistance of the existing building. The new entry pavilion creates a civic icon where there wasn’t any, and adds a stunning addition to the Atlanta streetscape. It welcomes visitors and screens them, and creates a new front door that anchors a plaza redesigned as an outdoor amenity shared with the community.
