The original air chilling contraptions were a lot more dependable.

For example, this week The Fox Theatre officially retires one of its hardest working amenities: the Midtown landmark's original 1929 air conditioning unit after 80 years of service.

The mountain of machinery housed in the theater's basement was a marvel of engineering for its time.

"The Fox had air conditioning before the White House did," explains Fox spokeswoman Kristen Delaney. "But the system was not very green. It takes a lot of water and electricity and we wanted to update that."

The 1929 system was an ammonia based system consisting of an air wash, wheel, motor and chiller. In 1946, a centrifugal chiller was added to ...

18th annual Fashion Cares benefit dishes up drama-scented stylish scene

In all the years we've covered retailer Jeffrey Kalinsky's always-ambitious Fashion Cares benefit, rarely does the show on the catwalk outdo the scene off-stage.

Monday night's 18th annual extravaganza hosted by the New York and Atlanta Jeffrey retailer on the 32nd floor of the new high rise 12th & Midtown was no exception.

As soon as they were seated, patrons took note in their programs that Kalinsky had dedicated this year's show to his father and iconic Bob Ellis shoe retailer Morris Kalinsky, who passed away this spring at age 86 .

Recalled his emotional son Monday night: "My dad loved Fashion Cares and he only missed a show when he was having quadruple bypass surgery. He was an amazing person but the most brilliant retailer ever. He taught me so much."

To remedy last year's Fashion Cares faux pas that saw some lubricated attendees get ...

Fashion's Night Out expands to Atlanta

At a 1 p.m. press conference at City Hall today, Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed is scheduled to announce the inaugural Fashion's Night Out Atlanta.

Set for September 10, the evening will include modeling showcases, live DJs and giveaways at some of the city's poshest boutiques and most popular retailers.

The now-global event, originated in New York in 2009, was created in collaboration between American Vogue magazine, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, NYC & Company and the City of New York.

The NYC event alone features more than 800 participating stores across five boroughs and attracts thousands of shoppers.

Other particpating Fashion's Night Out countries include: Australia, Great Britain, China, France, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Taiwan and Turkey.

In an advance statement sent to the press, Mayor Reed says: "I am delighted to host the first Fashion's Night Out ...

NeNe knocked off, other "Real Housewives" at risk in new Agatha's production

For the sad scribblers assigned to cover their every sharp intake of breath, the latest "Agatha's A Taste of Mystery" show dishes up some delicious wish fulfillment. The audience participation production spoofing a certain locally filmed hit Bravo reality show, running now through Nov. 3 at the downtown dinner theater? "The Dead Housewives of Atlanta." Well, OK. Technically, the entire title of the show is "Pyler Terry's The Dead Housewives of Atlanta." "Yeah, we're sort of killing two birds with one stone there if you will," explains Agatha's creative director Ryan Girard, his tongue napping fitfully in his cheek. "We just figured the subjects were ripe for a little fun." In the Agatha's production, the reality show's Twitter addicted, wigged out blonde Kim Zolciak becomes Pam Prozac and Lisa Wu Hartwell becomes Lisa Yu who only speaks of herself in the third person. The play's famed Atlanta writer/producer/director Pyler Terry, ...

Last minute frenzy doesn't frazzle veteran Fashion Cares co-chair

That distant rumble in the city today? No, it's not just a rush hour-snarling afternoon pop up shower.

It's the sound of all those procrastinating Prada wearers, jockeying for the evaporating prime seats at Monday night's 18th annual Fashion Cares benefit runway show set for 12th & Midtown at 7 p.m.

Thankfully, Fashion Cares founder, retailer Jeffrey Kalinsky has veteran co-chair Lila Hertz at the helm, a woman who can graciously tackle a migrane-inducing mountain of last-minute details while keeping her smile intact.

And unlike a lot of the city's charitable fundraisers who get distracted by the glitz and glamour of the events they chair, Hertz remains focused on the evening's chief goal: raising money for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Greater Atlanta chapter and the Atlanta AIDS Fund.

"I'm a breast cancer survivor," Hertz tells Intel during a break from her chairing duties. ...

Jonny Lang Botanical Garden concert canceled

Blues wonder boy Jonny Lang has canceled his Friday night concert at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens in Midtown, according to garden spokesman Danny Flanders.

Lang has a good reason. He and his wife welcomed a new baby into the world Thursday.

Ticket holders may request refunds at point of purchase.

Flanders says the garden hopes to work the guitarist and singer into their 2011 Concerts in the Garden line-up.

Hank Aaron to reunite with Waycross teens who ran with him as he hit No. 715

On Friday night, prior to the Braves taking on the Florida Marlins at Turner Field, steroid-free home run king Hank Aaron will welcome some very special guests into his office.

Let's hope they stay in their seats this time.

Aaron is scheduled to greet Cliff Courtenay and Britt Gaston, the two rascally Waycross teenagers who memorably lept onto the field at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium on April 8, 1974 as Aaron hit No. 715 to become baseball's new home run king.

Braves reps tell Intel that the life-long friends recently contacted Aaron's office and asked if they could meet with him before seeing a game at Turner Field.

Apparently, Aaron has forgiven the jokesters. He said yes. Following a private meeting, the trio will hold a brief press conference together.

The film chronicles the secret correspondence between Gone with the Wind author Margaret Mitchell and Morehouse College president Benjamin Mays, and the unlikely friendship that developed between the Civil Rights crusading educator and the author of the novel glorifying the Old South and eventually led to Mitchell's decision to (secretly again) sponsor Morehouse medical students.
Emphasis on the word power for the pre-show mingling in the lobby, where local movers and shakers like Atlanta Daily World publisher Alexis Scott and tycoon Charlie Loudermilk chatted as they browsed the display of artifacts from the University of Georgia archives and other collections.

Cook's Warehouse volunteer cooking assistant Cyrus Bhedwar surprised class instructor Naina Mehta when he dropped to one knee with a ring.

The couple met last year when Bhedwar was vacationing in London where Mehta works as a teacher.

She spent the summer here in Atlanta where he works for an environmental non-profit. But with school soon to be back session in London, Bhedwar knew the clock was ticking on their remaining time together before her departure this Sunday.

"Cooking is one of her greatest passions," Bhedwar tells Intel. "This has been such a special summer for us and Cook's Warehouse has been a big part of that."
