On Monday morning, Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed took time out from negotiating the region’s looming transportation infrastructure plan to announce the city’s second annual Fashion’s Night Out event.  “I want you all to know this must be important,” Reed told a packed press conference at the W Buckhead hotel. “Because right now, I’m in the middle of negotiating a $6.5 billion transportation deal!” The city’s fashionistas gave Reed a hearty round of applause (under state law, the ambitious plan has to be voted on Monday afternoon).

Once again, Atlanta will join 100 other U.S. cities and urban outlets across the globe Sept. 8 to 12 “to celebrate fashion, restore consumer confidence and boost the industry’s economy during the recession.” Various events at Lenox Square, Phipps Plaza and pop up events at Atlantic Station and throughout Midtown will showcase local retailers, designers and celebrate the city’s ever-evolving fashion sense. Atlanta magazine is a media sponsor of this year’s Fashion’s Night Out.

“Around the world, cities will put a spotlight on the fashion industry with special after-hours events on Tuesday, September 8,” Reed announced. “Fashion’s Night out has become a global phenomenon. Atlanta’s participation last year displayed our city’s emergence as a key player in the fashion industry.”

Camille Love from the city’s Cultural Affairs Office shared details about FNO week events, including an evening at Atlantic Station celebrating African American contributions to the catwalk with host Tyson Beckford, Tuesday Sept. 6 “to honor those who paved the way for African-Americans on the catwalk.” Late designer Willi Smith will be among the trailblazers saluted at the event.

Organizing Committee member and Sandpiper Boutique owner Melissa Murdock told Intel she was thrilled that Atlanta is once again part of the global FNO event. “Atlanta gets snubbed a lot,” she explained. “So for us to be a part of this event, along with Milan and New York, validates us as a fashion center. I just want us to upstage Los Angeles this year!”
