Exclusive: Eddie's Attic co-owner Alex Cooley on the departure of Eddie Owen

Veteran Atlanta concert promoter and current Eddie's Attic co-owner Alex Cooley talked to Atlanta magazine today about Attic namesake Eddie Owen's unexpected exit from the Decatur nightspot. Cooley told us Wednesday: "Eddie's got a new passion and that is the Red Clay Theatre in Duluth. He was no longer doing anything for the Attic. He hasn't been at the Attic in quite a while. He hasn't kept regular hours there in well over a month."

When Owen announced his firing Monday via his personal Facebook page, legions of friends and fans posted notes of support and many pledged allegiance to his new venture while fans and musicians threatened to boycott his home of 20 years on the square in Decatur. But Cooley says he's not afraid of potential backlash from artists: "I've contacted all the acts, nobody's cancelled. No problem." Cooley says he's currently taking on some of Owen's booking ...

UPDATE: Eddie Owen takes to Facebook to address his Eddie's Attic firing

In a Facebook post to friends posted Wednesday morning, Eddie Owen, the namesake and former owner of Eddie's Attic in Decatur responded to reaction from fans after he announced his firing from the club Monday morning. In the post Owen wrote: "Wow. Thanx for all the love. The ones of y'all that know me know that responding to each individual, on the computer, would take me 72 days. and to all those media / press folk, sorry I haven't called you back. it's a pretty simple story. Alex Cooley owns Eddie's, the decisions are his to make. He who owns the coins makes the rules. He fired me. It doesn't make him a bad guy, it's just a business decision he thinks best. Fox Film Festival line-up includes anniversary screenings of The Godfather, Deliverance

In an email sent to press this week announcing the 2012 Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival series, Fox Theatre general manager Allan C. Vella promises a "mix of classic and contemporary movies which gives everyone the opportunity not just to see a great film but to have a true movie going experience in the luxurious setting of the Fox Theatre."

The Midtown landmark will start off the schedule with a bang, with an excursion to a gin joint named Rick's Cafe Americain in Morocco and a spray of bullets courtesy of Michael Corleone. On Thursday, June 14, the Fox will celebrate the 70th anniversary of Casablanca with a screening, followed on Friday, Jun 15 with a 40th anniversary presentation of the mob classic "The Godfather" in addition to one more current blockbuster to be shown Friday, June 22.

Eddie Owen announces firing from namesake Eddie's Attic

In a feature dedicated to his 20-year successful run at Eddie's Attic in our current May 2012  issue, Eddie Owen told Atlanta magazine senior editor Tony Rehagen, "I don't think I'll ever leave the attic." According to a post on Owen's Facebook page Monday morning, those plans changed Friday night.

Posted Owens to his Facebook friends on his personal account: "I'm headed...this AM to put my FINAL Dave FM radio show in the can for 'Inside Eddie's Attic.' I won't be going inside Eddie's Attic again, got fired on Friday night."

By 10 a.m., 66 of Owen's Facebook friends had posted comments on the development. "I'd like to fire whoever fired you!" wrote Susan Ray. "I'm plotting a community take-over!"
