Our Place in the Universe: Most dangerous neighborhoods

Our city houses some mean streets. According to a list compiled by WalletPop based on data from NeighborhoodScout and the FBI, Atlanta has four of the twenty-five most dangerous neighborhoods in the country. That’s more than any other listed city (Las Vegas came in second with three). And we’re not talking metro area; these neighborhoods are all city proper. Covering the 30310 to 30314 zip codes (minus 30311 and including parts of 30303), the neighborhoods to steer clear of are generally Techwood, Vine City, Mechanicsville, and Pittsburgh—each of which is estimated to have over 100 violent crimes this year. It seems though last year the FBI noted that the crime rate in the ATL was down, Downtown still isn’t the safest place to be. But we can take solace knowing that our city doesn’t house the meanest street in all the land. That would be Chicago’s West Lake Street. Besides, we should take all of this with a grain of salt since NeighborhoodScouts also came up with a list that regarded Athens and Macon as more dangerous cities than Atlanta. Hmm.
