Atlanta dresses up for the city's 19th annual Jeffrey Fashion Cares benefit

"This is for our very special guest," B-52's frontman Fred Schneider explained as he glided past the VIPs sipping pricey Casa Dragones tequila with a white plate of artfully arranged cheese morsels in the 26th floor Loews hotel presidential suite Monday night. The Fashion Cares pre-party reception was for New York designer and the evening's honoree Jason Wu. But the "Love Shack" singer continued past Wu and presented the snacks to Violet, After-Party chairwoman Cathleen Smith-Bresciani's beloved golden retriever service pooch.
Welcome to Fashion Cares 2011, one of the city's most fashionable (and wildest) social gatherings of the year. If there was a dull moment at this year's Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Atlanta AIDS Fund benefit, we didn't observe it. We were too busy scoring scoop.
For example, Wu's heralded return to Fashion Cares was in question due to Hurricane Irene until co-chair Lila Hertz ...

Mayor Kasim Reed announces city's second annual Fashion's Night Out

On Monday morning, Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed took time out from negotiating the region's looming transportation infrastructure plan to announce the city's second annual Fashion's Night Out event.  "I want you all to know this must be important," Reed told a packed press conference at the W Buckhead hotel. "Because right now, I'm in the middle of negotiating a $6.5 billion transportation deal!" The city's fashionistas gave Reed a hearty round of applause (under state law, the ambitious plan has to be voted on Monday afternoon).
Once again, Atlanta will join 100 other U.S. cities and urban outlets across the globe Sept. 8 to 12 "to celebrate fashion, restore consumer confidence and boost the industry's economy during the recession." Various events at Lenox Square, Phipps Plaza and pop up events at Atlantic Station and throughout Midtown will showcase local retailers, designers and celebrate the city's ever-evolving fashion sense. Vanity Fair puts Janelle Monae on its International Best-Dressed List

Big Boi's protégé finally got onto Vanity Fair's International Best-Dressed List this year, according to a post on the mag's blog VF Daily.
I'm only surprised that it took this long for the national glossy to recognize our trendiest singer-songwriter. The Kansas native moved to ATL back in the mid aughts, signed to Diddy's Bad Boy Records in 2006, and released her first solo EP, Metropolis, in 2007. Of course, VF is known for being rather old-guard when it comes to just whom it inducts into its storied lists (this one is in its seventy-second year), but last year they added Gaga. Before Monáe. Gaga. Well, meat dresses are very well and good (not to mention the epitome of functional fashion), but I'll take Janelle's more timeless take on style any day. Bouffant hair and (irony-drenched) tuxedo'ed stately attire FTW. I think Karl Lagerfeld would agree.

Gilt City Atlanta rolls out even more deals for our thrifty denizens

Posted By: Jackson Reeves · 7/29/2011 4:00:00 PM
Well, Gilt City Atlanta had its soft launch on Monday, July 18, and this Wednesday it had its launch party at the Museum of Design Atlanta's new(ish) Midtown digs, so I guess it's finally official: We're Gilt-y (pardon the obvious pun). Guilty of wanting not just one deal but five. Per day. Per hour. Of wanting more, more, more. And I'm okay with that.
Other's have complained that when it comes to discount services, our market is oversaturated. This is true, but only insofar as every major metropolitan area is currently hitting a similar saturation point, so I take us hitting ours as yet another reminder that the ATL is a city comparable to Boston and Chicago (both of which were already Gilt Cities). Besides, I'd only start throwing out complaints of oversaturation if Gilt's addition to the scene were an innocuous one, if it were just throwing out ...
