The city's acoustic music fans thought they were getting a treat Tuesday night when touring New York City singer-songwriter and "Short Bus" actor Jay Brannan played Eddie's Attic in Decatur.

And then former Eddie's Attic Open Mic Night champ John Mayer issued this missive to his 3,698,837 followers on Twitter: "Atlanta people! Let's jam out at Eddie's Attic in Decatur. 11:30 p.m. Heading over now."

Hundreds of people immediately packed into the club. And out the door. And down the square.

We'll give you a reference point. On Sunday, Intel tried to gain entrance into the beyond-capacity AJC Decatur Book Festival-sponsored Edgar Allan Poe puppet show presented by the Center for Puppetry Arts at Eddie's Attic.

This was bigger.

Joining him on stage was Mayer's tour guitarist and bud David Ryan Harris. Like Mayer, the singer-songwriter and founding member of Atlanta rock/soul act Follow for Now is a former Atlantan and no stranger to the Attic stage.

Atlanta fans, including Twitterer Jonathan Howard, who were lucky enough to get inside shared Twitpics with the world (see photo at right).

On his way to a gig in Nashville, even Brannan was impressed by the Attic alum's unscheduled late-night appearance.

Tweeted Brannan: "I can't believe John Mayer showed up and played after me. Hahahah."

Early Wednesday morning, Mayer thanked fans and his fellow musicians, posting on Twitter: "Can't explain the fullness in my heart from returning to Eddie's Attic. My launching pad. I'm so moved."

Tonight, the Grammy winner moves to a slightly larger venue, Aaron's Amphitheatre at Lakewood with opening act Owl City. Tickets are still available via Live Nation.
