Udipi Cafe moved out of this nondescript, parking-challenged strip to a roomier mall a few blocks away, and Udipi’s owners opened this nonvegetarian restaurant in its wake. The menu leans Northern, but it’s the Southern-style fish curries at which the kitchen excels. Ask for kingfish as your seafood and order the Goan version, with creamy coconut and a sneak attack of heat, or the smoky Keralan version. Insider tip: The current chef is from Kerala, the spice-rich state known for its multifaceted cuisines. If you call ahead, he’ll make thoran, a vegetable stir-fry with grated coconut, mustard seeds, and curry leaves that will leave South India tingling in your mouth as you drive home happy.
