Rolling Reuben's finally rolls into action
After six long months of tempting tastebuds with luscious photographs of pastrami (that, quite frankly, could double as food porn) on its Rolling Reuben's Facebook fan page, the food truck spinoff of the iconic Broad Street deli debuts today.
Since 1996, the downtown Reuben's Deli has been feeding downtown cubicle dwellers and Georgia State students with stacks of corned beef, turkey and mounds of its classic elbow macaroni salad (with just the right amount of diced green pepper). Starting today at noon, the Reuben's mobile offspring rolls into action at Georgia State, Georgia Tech and tonight and Saturday night at Park Bench in Buckhead.
"It probably took us six months to get everything put together," co-owner Mikey Moran told us Friday. "But we just wanted to make sure we did it right. Consistency in the restaurant industry is huge and we wanted to bring the Rueben's Deli experience to the truck as well."
Some of the deli's best-selling sandwiches will be featured on the food truck's menu, of course, including the eatery's Reuben, Turkey Club, the Ultimate Three Cheese Grilled Cheese, The New Yorker and The Veggie.
"We trained all our Rolling Reuben's employees in the deli for a month," Moran explains. "Just so they had a feel for how things are done."
For downtown Reuben's Deli regulars, the hilariously loud banter at the family-run business is part of ordering fun. Moran says customers at the food truck offshoot should expect a similar, um, vocal experience. "We want the employees' personalities to shine," Moran says. "So yeah, it could get a little loud. When you go into the deli, you can always spot the southern people in the place. They're the ones trying to figure out why we're all screaming and yelling at each other!"
Rolling Reuben's debuts today at Georgia State on the corner of Decatur and Collins streets from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., at Georgia Tech at 172 4th Street from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Friday and Saturday night at Park Bench at 34 Irby Avenue from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. For more info, go to RollingReubens.com.
