Plenty of farmers markets stay open through fall

Though some markets wrap up this week, you can still get your weekly veggie fix

It used to be that Labor Day signaled the end of white clothing until the following Memorial Day. (That’s the way it once was, you know.) In more recent years, what’s made me sad each Labor Day is that seasonal farmers start winding down until the following spring.

This year, though, I’m feeling pretty cheerful. It’s still true that some markets have already closed for summer, and more will close this week. But just like those old rules of fashion, the lines have blurred for farmers market seasons, too. We’re seeing more and more markets continue to operate right up to Thanksgiving and even Christmas. Several markets—including Decatur, Marietta, and Peachtree City—never close at all.

With school back in session (that’s another thing that used to happen at Labor Day) family life may have gotten more hectic, but that’s no reason to stop buying locally produced food. So go ahead: Put on your favorite white outfit and head to one of the markets listed below.
