Opulent—the downtown Roswell restaurant by F&H Food Trading Group founders Hicham Azhari and Fikret Kovac—has a new name and a new menu to go with it. Now called 1920 Tavern, the restaurant has been tweaked to focus on approachability. Changes include adding more sandwiches to the food offerings, more bourbons to the bar, and more color to the dining room.

When the restaurant first opened last May, the theme was the Roaring Twenties, according to Azhari. Now, he hopes, the name and the food will better fit the backstory.

“We listened to the neighbors’ feedback. People thought ‘Opulent’ was over the top,” says Azhari, who co-founded Salt Factory Pub and Little Alley Steak. “We want to make it a welcoming environment—something a little more casual.”

The food is now more skewed toward tavern fare. There’s a selection of flatbreads, soups and salads, dips like spinach and artichoke and shrimp and crab, and sandwiches, as well as entrees. The burger and eggplant fries, which were popular at Opulent, remain on the menu. New additions include oysters, spaghetti and Kobe beef meatballs, and jumbo lump crab cakes. The shrimp taco from the now-defunct Inc. Street Food has a found a new home at 1920 Tavern. Pappy Van Winkle bourbons are now available from the bar.

“Overall, we toned it down a bit,” Azhari says.

He and Kovac introduced oranges and reds into the primarily black and white restaurant by swapping out the Charlie Chaplin paintings for more abstract, colorful ones created by local artist William Massey. They even changed the servers’ uniforms from a shirt and tie to “whatever they want.”

“So far the folks are loving it,” he says.
