The new Merchant at Howell Mill, a gift and stationery store tucked just down from Bocado and Redefined Home Boutique, may be in a tiny space, but it’s got a big attitude. “We have a passion for paper. It’s just fun to see what the designers do,” says owner Dan Collier. A longtime wholesaler at AmericasMart and regional rep for leading brands such as Kate Spade, Rifle Paper, and Caroline Gardner, Collier has a sharp eye for what’s fresh in greeting cards, notes, books, and gifts. The industrial space is furnished with vintage items, including old post office cubbies, globes, and a canoe—most of which Collier is happy to sell right off the floor. Pop in for witty cocktail napkins (“Paris is always a good idea,” Audrey Hepburn), and you just might go home with a sofa.
