Bill Addison nominated for James Beard Award

Remember our finger-licking good barbecue package from July 2010? Well, it seems the James Beard Foundation sure did. It’s nominated our food editor and restaurant critic Bill Addison for one of its annual James Beard Awards for journalism, as reported on CNN’s Eatocracy. Specifically, Addison’s barbecue package is up for the “food culture and travel” award, which recognizes work that “makes the connection of food to a community or location.” Jim Auchmutey’s insightful essay “Where Does Georgia Fit Into the Southern Barbecue Spectrum?” certainly helped cinch the nom, but it was Addison’s tireless trek to taste fifty-eight local joints that really ensured the mag could be a contender for this accolade. (Charles Bethea also contributed.)

Addison is up against a trio of writers from Garden & Gun along with Matt Gross for Saveur. This is the second time that Addison is up for a James Beard Award. When he was at Creative Loafing in 2006, he was named a finalist for his feature “Hail to the Chefs.”
