Who better to recommend a doctor than another doctor? For our 2011 Top Doctors feature, we asked hundreds of metro-area doctors to name their most respected colleagues.
Atlanta magazine’s Top Doctors list was compiled by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. This New York–based healthcare research and information company was founded in 1991 by a former medical college board chairman and president to help consumers identify America’s top doctors and top hospitals. Castle Connolly’s established survey and research process involves tens of thousands of top doctors and the medical leadership of prominent hospitals.
 Castle Connolly’s physician-led team of researchers follows a rigorous screening process to select top doctors on both the national and regional levels. Using mail and telephone surveys and electronic ballots, they ask a randomly selected sample of board-certified physicians and key medical leaders to identify highly skilled, exceptional doctors. Careful screening of doctors’ educational and professional experience is essential before final selection.
Castle Connolly seeks nominations not only of physicians who excel in academic medicine and research but also, most importantly, those who exhibit excellence in patient care—those to whom nominating physicians would send their own families. The survey does not include fields in which patients rarely have a choice, such as emergency medicine, nor does it include cosmetic surgery as a standalone specialty. Thus, Castle Connolly identifies the most respected doctors in America and provides consumers with detailed information about their education, training, and special expertise in its paperback guidebooks, online directories, and national and regional magazine Top Doctors features such as the one in this issue.
