There we were, sitting along a black-and-white petrified wood bar twenty-two stories up, looking out at the Atlanta sky, now blood-orange after a summer storm. Many have wondered if Polaris—atop the Hyatt Regency Atlanta, once the tallest building in the city—still has a decent view.

Janice Palmer grew up in Jamaica, but her decorating style transcends a strictly Caribbean vibe. “I was raised around houses with the British Colonial look, but I would describe my own style as more classic-contemporary,” the interior designer says.

Video of the Day: Annie Lennox performs “Georgia On My Mind”

The former Eurythmics singer is thinking about our state—whether she knows it or not

October 17, 2014 Tony Rehagen Add a comment

When an artist covers a song, it can be seen as an improvement, an homage, or a desecration (see Madonna’s “American Pie”). But 1980s pop star Annie Lennox’s latest soulful cut of “Georgia On My Mind”—recently released in advance of her Oct. 27 collection of standards Nostalgia—is just a reminder of what a timeless masterpiece it is.

Inspiring Beauty: 50 Years of Ebony Fashion displays 40 ensembles from the annual event

October 17, 2014 Mary Logan Bikoff Add a comment

The Ebony Fashion Fair first came to Atlanta in the early 1960s, sponsored in part by the local chapter of Delta Sigma Theta sorority. It was a Sunday-best kind of event, the biggest to-do of the year for some. This month MODA will host an exhibition by the Chicago History Museum, Inspiring Beauty: 50 Years of Ebony Fashion, with forty of these ensembles by designers like Missoni and Givenchy, plus films and other objects.

    Getaway: Beaufort, North Carolina

A bit of New England in the Outer Banks

October 17, 2014 Lisa Mowry Add a comment

First, let’s get the Beaufort/Beaufort confusion out of the way. Beaufort (pronounced “Bew-furt”), South Carolina, is a perfectly fine town—but not our destination this time. I prefer to head up the coast to Beaufort (pronounced “Bo-furt”), North Carolina, for an experience entirely different from the barrier islands south of Charleston: no palm trees, golf courses, or Lowcountry cuisine here.

Emilio Pucci in America shows off the Italian aristocrat’s signature kaleidoscopic patterns

October 16, 2014 Mary Logan Bikoff Add a comment

Little-known fact: Italian aristocrat and fashion designer Emilio Pucci, famous for his kaleidoscopic patterns, studied agriculture at the University of Georgia in 1935. This month, a costume exhibition at the Georgia Museum of Art, Emilio Pucci in America, brings his work back to Athens. According to curator Mary Koon, Pucci long maintained his Georgia ties, even instating his American headquarters in Atlanta during the eighties.

Butternut squash soup with sage quenelle and crispy speck

October 15, 2014 Evan Mah Add a comment

Fall has finally arrived, which means it’s time to take advantage of one of my favorite fall vegetables: butternut squash. They’re remarkably versatile and perfect for salads, gratins, lasagna, and risotto. I’m particularly fond of using them for soups, like this butternut squash soup with a sage quenelle and crispy speck.
