MODA celebrates 50 years of the Ebony Fashion Fair
Inspiring Beauty: 50 Years of Ebony Fashion displays 40 ensembles from the annual event
The Ebony Fashion Fair first came to Atlanta in the early 1960s, sponsored in part by the local chapter of Delta Sigma Theta sorority. It was a Sunday-best kind of event, the biggest to-do of the year for some. This month MODA will host an exhibition by the Chicago History Museum, Inspiring Beauty: 50 Years of Ebony Fashion, with forty of these ensembles by designers like Missoni and Givenchy, plus films and other objects.

Getaway: Beaufort, North Carolina
A bit of New England in the Outer Banks
First, let’s get the Beaufort/Beaufort confusion out of the way. Beaufort (pronounced “Bew-furt”), South Carolina, is a perfectly fine town—but not our destination this time. I prefer to head up the coast to Beaufort (pronounced “Bo-furt”), North Carolina, for an experience entirely different from the barrier islands south of Charleston: no palm trees, golf courses, or Lowcountry cuisine here.

Emilio Pucci in America shows off the Italian aristocrat’s signature kaleidoscopic patterns
Little-known fact: Italian aristocrat and fashion designer Emilio Pucci, famous for his kaleidoscopic patterns, studied agriculture at the University of Georgia in 1935. This month, a costume exhibition at the Georgia Museum of Art, Emilio Pucci in America, brings his work back to Athens. According to curator Mary Koon, Pucci long maintained his Georgia ties, even instating his American headquarters in Atlanta during the eighties.

There is one backcountry inn only accessible by foot in Georgia. Starting from a parking lot above Amicalola Falls, it’s a beautiful, fairly easy five-mile walk through a mossy forest just ninety minutes north of Atlanta.
