Low-flow toilets, high-efficiency lighting, and composting bins in the company cafeteria are steps some Atlanta offices are taking to be environmentally conscious—while saving money and competing in a national contest. More than 120 properties in Downtown, Midtown, and Buckhead are enrolled in the Better Buildings Challenge. The goal: to reduce energy and water consumption by at least 20 percent in participating buildings by 2020. Maria Vargas, who directs the program for the U.S. Department of Energy, calls the Atlanta BBC “a model for the rest of the country.”
