Dust off your athletic gear and get in the game in one of the city's many adult rec leagues

Why let kids have all the fun? Here are some adults-only recreational leagues. Most offer a range of divisions from low-pressure to ultracompetitive, so you can find a team whether you’re fresh off a college roster or just off the sofa.

Basketball
League: Georgia Sports Leagues
Season: Year-round
Where they play: Gyms in Doraville, Dunwoody, and Sandy Springs
When to register: Anytime
Cost: $65/person; $495/team (no roster limit)
Age: 18+
Gender: Men's and women's leagues
Most common injury: Exhaustion
Post-game tradition: Oxygen and pain medication
Uniform: Reversible jersey or T-shirt
Best team name(s): Bricklayers, Low Expectations, Free Ballers
Calories/hour: 476
Winners receive: Team trophy and championship shirt

Bocce
League: Atlanta Bocce League
Season: Year-round
Where they play: Piedmont Park, various bars around the metro area
When to register: About a month before start of each season

Post-game tradition: Finishing the drink you started during the game and ordering another round

Post-game tradition: SweetWater 420 and buffalo fried chicken sandwich at Atkins Park

Cricket
League: Atlanta Cricket League
Season: March–November
Where they play: Various fields, including locations in Roswell, Alpharetta, Sugar Hill, and Marietta
When to register: 2nd and 3rd weeks of March
Cost: $150–$750/team (depends on tournament)
Age: 18+
Gender: Co-ed league (but so far, only men have played)
Most common injury: Back spasm, pulled hamstring
Post-game tradition: Young players go to the bar; older players go home to family
Uniform: Jersey and shorts or track pants
Best team name(s): Ninjas, Cloud 9, Limitless, Bazookas

Winners receive: Winners and runners-up receive team trophies and individual medals or trophies

Dodgeball
League: ZogSports
Season: Year-round
Where they play: St. James United Methodist Church (Buckhead)
When to register: 4–6 weeks before start of season
Cost: $80/person; $650/team (up to 10)
Age: 21+
Gender: Co-ed league
Most common injury: Hurt pride, broken or jammed fingers
Post-game tradition: Whitehall Tavern for cheap pitchers and aggressive rounds of a drinking game called “Chandelier”
Uniform: Zog-issued T-shirt

Winners receive: League winner and runner-up from each division get a check to favorite charity or nonprofit

Flag Football
League: Atlanta Sports Connection
Season: Year-round
Where they play: Anderson Park (west Atlanta), J.P. Moseley Park (Stockbridge)
When to register: About a month before start of each season
Cost: $55/person
Age: 21+
Gender: Men's, women's and co-ed leagues
Most common injury: Pulled hamstring
Post-game tradition: Tailgating
Uniform: Jersey and shorts
Best team name(s): K.A.O.S (Kicking Ass on Sunday)
Calories/hour: 476
Winners receive: Trophy, championship shirt, and 15 percent off next season’s registration; based on order of finish, all members receive national sanctioning points for tournament play. (These guys are serious.)

Kickball
League: World Adult Kickball Association
Season: Year-round
Where they play: Cobb Park (Smyrna), Hammond Park (Sandy Springs)
When to register: Through game 2 of season (best at least 2 weeks before)
Cost: $73/person
Age: 21+
Gender: Co-ed league
Most common injury: Pulled hamstring, twisted ankle
Post-game tradition: Varners in Smyrna or the Bird in Dunwoody to grab some pitchers and start the pong, cornhole, and flip cup challenges
Uniform: Team T-shirt
Best team name(s): Saved by the Ball
Calories/hour: 408
Winners receive: League champ prizes may include customized shirts, water bottles, steins, trophies, or duffle bags. Bragging rights and pitchers of beer mandatory.

Soccer
League: Atlanta Sport and Social Club
Season: Year-round
Where they play: Outdoor: Piedmont Park, Central Park (Old Fourth Ward); indoor: Lynwood Recreation Center (Brookhaven)
When to register: 6–8 weeks before start of season
Cost: $55–$85/person
Age: 21+
Gender: Co-ed league
Most common injury: Twisted ankle
Post-game tradition: Piedmont goes for totchos and beer buckets at the Nook; Central Park heads to Midtown Tavern for a rematch via flip cup or giant beer pong
Uniform: Team T-shirt (moisture-wicking jersey available at extra cost)

Softball

Volleyball

Where they play: Sand: Brookhaven Boys & Girls Club; indoor: Mercer University’s Atlanta campus
When to register: 4–6 weeks before start of season

Age: 21+
Gender: Men's, women's, and co-ed leagues
Most common injury: Rotator cuff, ACL
Post-game tradition: Teams get a free pitcher of Bud Light from sponsors after every match at Mellow Mushroom and/or Hudson Grille in Brookhaven.

Winners receive: Everyone makes the playoffs. Winning team gets the famous “Dixie Cup”; tradition is to take a victory drink out of the cup.
