We’re in the middle of new fit cities ranking

When it comes to being in shape, Atlantans are so-so. Our city ranked about in the middle (No. 21) on the American College of Sports Medicine’s fittest cities list.

The American Fitness Index evaluates the health and fitness status of the 50 largest U.S. cities.

For the 3rd consecutive year, the Minneapolis area topped the list. Other healthy places include Washington D.C., and Portland, Ore. The cities at the bottom: San Antonio, Detroit, and Oklahoma City.

According to the index, Atlanta’s strong points are lots of parks, golf courses, swimming pools, and tennis courts. The bad news: few farmers’ markets, dog parks, ball diamonds, and people who bike or walk to work. Plus, we have a higher percentage of smokers, and people with asthma, diabetes, and heart disease.
