Design Director, Atlanta magazine

Job Description
Atlanta magazine, one of the country’s premier city and regional magazines, seeks a Design Director who will be responsible for the overall look of the Atlanta magazine brand—focusing on print and, to a lesser extent, on digital and social media. The Design Director will collaborate with the editorial staff to create a magazine each month that is visually inviting, provocative, sophisticated, and commercial. The Design Director will touch, directly or indirectly, every editorial page of the magazine. This position reports to the Editor-in-chief, Atlanta magazine. An eagerness to develop magazine brand extensions through multi-platform storytelling is important in this position (examples include video content, podcasts, e-commerce platforms, digital newsletters, etc.)

Job responsibilities include:

  • Working with the editor-in-chief to conceive and execute compelling and commercial covers
  • Clearly and promptly communicating assignments to contributing photographers, illustrators, and graphic artists
  • Overseeing and implementing any future redesign of the magazine
  • Closely adhering to the established budget and maximizing it in creative ways
  • Working closely with different departments to ensure a timely close of each issue
  • Finding ways to tell stories graphically and in unconventional and non-linear ways
  • Leading brainstorming sessions, suggesting heds and deks, and coming up with story ideas
  • Planning, alongside the editor-in-chief and section editors, for future covers and features
  • Nurturing and cultivating a deep roster of contributing photographers, illustrators, and graphic artists
  • Directing photo shoots as appropriate

Ideal candidates will:

  • Be proficient with the full Adobe Creative Suite
  • Have attention to detail
  • Be able to multi-task while being focused on meeting monthly deadlines
  • Have five years minimum experience in magazine design/layout/art direction
  • Have a working knowledge of social and digital platforms, video, WordPress, etc.
  • Be team oriented, have excellent communication skills, desire to collaborate and have an entrepreneurial mindset

Senior Editor, Atlanta magazine

Job Description
Atlanta magazine, one of the country’s premier city and regional magazines, seeks a Senior Editor who will oversee our coverage of food and lifestyle. The Senior Editor will oversee our monthly dining coverage, the “Bite” section, in addition to helming food-related cover packages. This includes generating story ideas, assigning stories, and working with our freelance writers as well as cultivating new writers.

The Senior Editor should have a solid knowledge of Atlanta’s culinary scene, along with a curiosity and interest in all things food. In addition, the Senior Editor should have knowledge and interest in Atlanta’s lifestyle offerings, including design and arts. Applicants from beyond Atlanta should be able to demonstrate similar depth of knowledge in another region, and be willing to immediately be immersed in the contours of Atlanta’s dynamic culinary and lifestyle scene, including cultivating a deep pool of contacts across these industries.

We seek someone with a flair for storytelling, who thrives in a collaborative, creative environment and is eager to explore the city and share their knowledge with readers.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Generate compelling ideas and assign stories about Atlanta’s culinary scene.
  • Generate compelling lifestyle ideas and assign stories.
  • Outstanding food coverage is a foundation of Atlanta magazine; maintain that stature while also elevating it.
  • Work with and nurture our bank of freelance food and lifestyle writers, in addition to identifying new writers.
  • Edit assigned stories to ensure they are clearly written and meet the standards of Atlanta magazine.
  • Participate in story idea sessions with fellow editors and take a leadership role in the direction and content of the magazine.
  • Take the lead role in assigning and editing food and/or lifestyle cover stories.
  • Help plan future cover stories and features.

Ideal candidates will:

  • Have at least two years of experience in magazine editorial work, with demonstrated experience in both writing original stories and editing other journalists’ writing .
  • Impeccable attention to detail and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Have a demonstrated background in culinary arts and/or experience writing about food.
  • Have experience working with InCopy. Have experience working across digital platforms (eg Slack, InCopy/InDesign, Google Suite, etc.), and be open to working with new platforms.
  • Be team oriented, with  excellent communication skills, and a desire to collaborate with teammates at various levels of seniority.
