When my husband and I moved into our first apartment, fresh out of grad school, we bought our first sofa at the Buckhead Havertys. We lived a lot of life on that forest green sofa—jumping on it when Juan Samaranch announced the Olympics were coming to Atlanta, when the Braves won the World Series, and when they didn’t. But then both Havertys and our family moved out to the suburbs.

Somehow, it seems a fitting sign of today’s more hopeful times that Havertys is back in Buckhead—in the very same building where we bought that sofa (3255 Peachtree Road Northeast). Last week I was excited to tour the newly renovated, 23,000-square-foot “Style Studio”—a more compact showroom that relies on technology to display custom options and includes urban-minded collections along with its more traditional pieces.

Unlike other venerated Atlanta retailers such as Rich’s and Muse’s, Havertys is still going strong. Founded by J.J. Haverty in 1885, the publicly traded firm has more than one hundred stores in sixteen states. However, for the last six years, the company had not had a store inside its hometown’s Perimeter.

“We’ve been trying to figure out how to get back here for a long time,” said Chairman and CEO Clarence Smith. “With all that’s happening in Buckhead, the timing is extraordinary for us.”
