Vern Yip Design WiseVern Yip loves books—he stacks them all over his house, posts photos of his favorites on Instagram, even rearranges them with the seasons. So when the HGTV star and Washington Post columnist prepared to write his first design book—due out September 13—he had strong opinions.

“There are two kinds of design books available,” says Yip. “There are those with lots of information, but they’re hard to digest. And then there are vanity tomes, which are beautiful and relaxing to peruse, but not helpful. I wanted to write a book that is balanced. It had to be functional and aesthetically pleasing.”

Published by Running Press, Vern Yip’s Design Wise: Your Smart Guide to a Beautiful Home consists of three parts. The first section provides remarkably practical advice about decisions like how to select the right sized rug. The second features striking photos of Yip’s family homes in Atlanta, Manhattan, and Rosemary Beach. The final section consists of handy cheat sheets to guide readers’ home decorating projects.

The keys to a successfully designed space—scale, comfort, proportion, lighting, color harmony—are the same for every style and will never go out of fashion, Yip says.

Want to meet Yip? He’ll be signing his book on September 17 at Phipps Plaza Frontgate, on September 22 at Barnes & Noble, Buckhead, and on September 29 at Fabricut at ADAC.
