Depending on how it’s used, green can be either soothing or energizing, according to Stephanie Andrews, founder of Balance Design Atlanta. She and fellow designer John Hunt exploited both attributes in this teenager’s room, tapping into 15-year-old Amelia Kushner’s love of theater to create a dramatic yet serene space.

Shagadelic
“We chose this furry white rug for high contrast,” says Andrews. “But it’s also super soft on the toes getting in and out of bed.”

Natural Elements
The duvet cover in a leafy pattern references the trees outside this Virginia-Highland house and relates to the deer print above the bed.

Mod Nods
The midcentury-style bedside table from West Elm and turquoise glass lamp are appropriately hip and youthful.

All four walls are wrapped in Sherwin-Williams “Turquish” in eggshell.

Clear Vision
Since the walls have so much personality, Andrews chose an acrylic, see-through desk. A white shelving unit mounted above hides homework supplies.

Tip: A framed poster of a deer in crew socks adds whimsy on a budget. “We bought it from Art.com,” says Andrews, “but the custom framing is what makes it stand out.”
