Internships

Please note: We are not accepting internship applications at this time.

Atlanta magazine offers a comprehensive internship program for college and graduate students. Internships require approximately 15 hours of work per week; these hours may be distributed across days of the intern’s choosing, but they must be completed during the magazine’s office hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Positions are unpaid but offer invaluable experience in all aspects of magazine journalism. A stipend of $60 a month is available to cover the costs of parking downtown or taking MARTA. Note: You must be able to receive college credit for the internship in order to be eligible.

Applicants must select one of the following areas of focus, plus one optional backup:

EDITORIAL

Editorial internship: Interns are responsible for fact-checking, proofreading, research, and occasional writing for the print magazine and website. Candidates should exhibit strong grammar and writing skills and have previous professional experience (preferably at a newspaper/magazine). A major in journalism or English is preferred.

News internship: News interns will get an up-close look at reporting on—and writing about—local and statewide issues including politics, social justice, and the occasional interstate highway collapse for atlantamagazine.com. In addition to reporting and writing, interns will conduct research, generate ideas, and help produce longer stories. Experience reporting on government and government departments is a plus but not required.

Digital internship: Interns will gain hands-on experience producing content for atlantamagazine.com. Responsibilities include uploading stories from the magazine, building email newsletters, and pitching and writing stories for the website. Candidates should exhibit strong writing skills and a basic knowledge of HTML; experience in WordPress is strongly encouraged; courses in digital journalism a plus.

Dining internship: The dining internship is an exceptional opportunity to explore the city’s culinary roots and report on local restaurants, events, and chefs. The intern will write and report stories for dining section of the magazine’s website. The successful candidate will have prior publishing experience, strong writing and reporting skills, the ability to generate fresh story ideas, and of course, a passion for food!

ART

Photography internship: We are looking for a student who is comfortable handling photography equipment and lighting, well-versed in Adobe Photoshop, and familiar with stock photo agencies. Responsibilities include organizing issue artwork, scouting and researching, and assisting on photo shoots. Interns will also undertake photography assignments, skills permitting. Candidates should be organized, deadline-driven, and effective in communicating over the phone, in person, or via email.

Design internship: We’re looking for a design intern to work in the art department of Atlanta magazine. Responsibilities include: participating in the planning of the art that goes in the magazine; helping on photo shoots; assisting in the design and production of editorial pages; and designing sales and marketing materials. We are looking for students with solid understanding of graphic design principles, interest in editorial design and experience with Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign and Photoshop. Candidates should be organized, deadline-driven, and effective communicators.

MARKETING

Marketing internship: We are looking for enthusiastic marketing interns to join our marketing department and provide creative ideas to help enhance the Atlanta magazine brand. Marketing interns will have the opportunity to collaborate with our marketing and advertising teams throughout all stages of multiple marketing campaigns. Interns are responsible for proofreading, research, database development, event coordination, and occasional writing.
