Inspired by the rugged but modern wares of retailers like Steven Alan, Garrett Hilgendorf launched Elk Head Clothing in Atlanta last year. The Michigan native, who has a day job in healthcare, originally planned to create an online shop featuring his favorite brands. But after talks with local menswear pros, Hilgendorf decided to also develop and sell his own line. His second collection is out now, with slim but sturdy trousers, leather and canvas accessories, and six shirting silhouettes—including Western, popover, and round collar—all made from Japanese-woven fabrics. He’s landed other labels, including Naked & Famous denim and Alternative, to round out the offerings. And the name? Hilgendorf wanted something that spoke to durability and elegance—and gave a nod to his youth spent in the Michigan wilderness with his father. A 12-point elk head hangs in his Midtown apartment.
