If there’s one thing Asha Gomez has taught us, it’s that Indian food is more than fiery curries and mango lassis. What does she eat? To find out, I asked Gomez to take me on a tour of some of her favorite Indian spots around town.

It was the year of the city center. With the opening of Buckhead Atlanta, Inman Park’s Krog Street Market, and Alpharetta’s Avalon, restaurants opened in droves. Local chefs got a nod from the James Beard Foundation, a lime shortage caused momentary panic, and one popular pop-up signed on its first brick-and-mortar location. Read on as we remember when.

Four days. That’s all it took for Gomez to rebound after locking the door to Cardamom Hill, which attracted national attention but not enough local allegiance.

Last week Asha Gomez surprised Atlanta when she announced that she would be closing Cardamom Hill after dinner service tonight. Cardamom Hill had been named among Bon Appétit magazine's Top 50 Best New Restaurants in 2012, and the restaurant later became a James Beard semi-finalist. But even after tonight, Gomez will still be hard at work; she plans to open an Indian patisserie called Spice to Table in Studioplex Friday.

Outstanding in the Field, an organization that coordinates on-farm dinners using local chefs and often on-site ingredients, recently released its 2014 schedule and will begin selling tickets to its events March 20. The Atlanta events will be held September 27-28 at Love is Love Farm in Decatur. Joe Truex, executive chef and owner of Watershed on Peachtree, and Asha Gomez, of Cardamom Hill, will headline.

Asha Gomez never knows when a new taste in Atlanta will take her back to Kerala, the lush southwestern state on the coast of India where she was born and raised.

Asha Gomez, chef and owner of Cardamom Hill, is branching out from the restaurant business into another aspect of the food world: She'll open the Third Space at Inman Park's Studioplex in late February. Multifunctional and custom built with Miele appliances, Gomez says the space will be a one-stop destination for chef demos and classes, private dinners, tastings, and more.
