Looking back, a review of 2013

As the saying goes, you win some, and you lose some. This year we saw famed mixologists leave their longtime outposts, award-winning chefs open new “it” spots, and the restaurant community band together to help one of their own. As we welcome in the new year, we pause to take a look back at what happened in 2013.

Ford Fry talks details on his upcoming St. Cecilia

The next restaurant to open in chef Ford Fry’s burgeoning empire, St. Cecilia will focus on light seafood and pastas influenced by Northern Italy. Its home, formerly Buckhead Life Restaurant Group’s Bluepointe, is being completely renovated, and as it enters the final stages of construction, Fry feels comfortable enough to announce a December—or at the latest, January—target launch date. Here, he shares the plans for the restaurant’s menu, atmosphere, and executive chef, as well as some new concepts he’s contemplating.

Shucks and Common Quarter open, Rathbun’s offers cooking classes, and more

Common Quarter begins serving
The East Cobb restaurant from the Local Three and Muss & Turner's crew kicks off service tonight, offering the likes of crawfish rolls, cauliflower risotto, Low Country bouillabaisse, rabbit stroganoff, fried apple pie, and more. According to UrbanDaddy, Common Quarter embraces its theme to the core, with Savannah-style gas lamps and an oversize map of St. Simons.

Spotted Trotter to open first restaurant in Krog Street Market

At a media preview Tuesday afternoon, Kevin Ouzts of Spotted Trotter announced that his first restaurant, The Cockentrice, will open in the KSM market.

Buckhead is back, y’all, reveling in its first restaurant boomlet since the middle of last decade. And just like old times, each fresh-faced entrant quickly galvanizes a certain facet of the uptown community, spawning distinct social microclimates.

Fry's Tex-Mex restaurant to be called Superica
Ford Fry—the chef behind the Optimist, No. 246, King Duke, and more—has named his Krog Street Market Tex-Mex spot Superica, reports Eater Atlanta. The name came from the words "super taqueria." The restaurant will open by early 2014.

Fire at Vine & Tap
Fire broke out at Vine & Tap, the Buckhead wine bar and small plates restaurant by Ian Mendelsohn, this week. Because of that, the grand opening—which was originally set for July—has been pushed back to late September.

HD1 to become FLIP Burger
HD1, the Poncey-Highland hot dog spot by chef Richard Blais, is now closed. The restaurant is being retrofitted as a FLIP Burger Boutique—another Blais creation—and will reopen in eight to ten weeks, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The new FLIP location will feature a rooftop patio. Select HD1 hot dogs will be added to the menu.

Giovanni di Palma’s Caffé Gio opens
Antico Pizza Napoletana founder Giovanni di Palma made great strides toward the completion of Piazza San Gennaro, his planned Westside neighborhood, last week with the opening of Caffe Gio, a gelateria and Neapolitan café. Adjacent to Antico, Caffe Gio serves “traditional Neapolitan street food,” including panini, salads, and chicken soup, Eater Atlanta reports. The gelato (ten flavors) is imported from Italy.

Dante Stephensen plans to auction off pirate ship décor
Dante Stephensen, founder and namesake of iconic fondue and jazz spot Dante’s Down the Hatch, has announced plans to auction off the restaurant’s equipment and decorations, reports the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Dante’s closed late last month after the land was sold to Atlantic Realty Partners and Behringer Harvard, who plan to build an apartment tower. Stephensen’s auction will take place at the restaurant on September 21, starting at 9 a.m. The $95 entry price includes food, drink, and live jazz.

Taria Camerino starts work at Miso Izakaya
Pastry chef and Sugar-Coated Radical founder Taria Camerino recently left Rocket Farms Restaurants (Ford Fry’s empire) and has joined forces with Guy Wong at Miso Izakaya, Creative Loafing reports. She is working on a Japanese-inspired dessert menu and will be creating some items for Yum Bunz as well.

In the food news this week

Hugh Acheson to open Mexican restaurant
Five and Ten recently moved from South Lumpkin Street to Milledge Avenue in Athens, and Hugh Acheson isn’t wasting any time filling the old spot. He told the Athens Banner-Herald he plans to open a Mexican restaurant called Cinco y Diez, spearheaded by Farm 255 chef Whitney Otawka.

Krog Street Market names seven tenants
Formerly a manufacturing facility and home to Atlanta Stove Works, Krog Street Market aims to open this winter in Inman Park with a variety of eateries. This week, Paces Properties confirmed seven tenants including: a Mex-Tex restaurant by chefs Ford Fry and Kevin Maxey, an American brasserie and bistro called the Luminary by chef Eli Kirshtein, Grand Champion BBQ, the Spotted Trotter, and Pannus Bakery, which will specialize in hispanic and European pastries.

New executive chef at Ecco
Jonathan Beatty, formerly of Davanti Enoteca in Chicago, has replaced Craig Richards as executive chef at Ecco, according to Eater Atlanta.

Bella Cucina closed Virginia-Highland location
Gourmet food store Bella Cucina closed its Virginia-Highland location last week, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. (Tomorrow's News Today broke the story.) A post on the shop's Facebook page announced that a new retail location will open in the fall, but it did not specify where.

A fractured ankle for Rathbun
In addition to a 4th of July fire at Rathbun’s causing temporary closure of the restaurant, and a power outage at KR SteakBar leading to a 45-minute evacuation on July 5, chef Kevin Rathbun now has a fractured ankle. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Rathbun acquired the injury when he fell through the drop ceiling while assessing fire damage at Rathbun’s.

Roots Juices now open
Hopping on the fresh pressed vegetable and fruit juices trend, Roots—a Texas-based company—is now open in the Shops Around Lenox. Atlanta.com reports that this Dtox competitor offers more than 17 types of juices, infused waters, and cleanses, and each 16-ounce juice is comprised of about two to three pounds of fruit and veggies.

Three Taverns Brewery launches
A new source of craft beers in Atlanta, Three Taverns officially launches at Brick Store Pub in Decatur tonight with the introduction of two new brews: Single Intent, a Belgian-style single, and A Night In Brussels IPA, a Belgian-style American I.P.A.

What we know about Ford Fry’s Tex-Mex restaurant

With King Duke now operating smoothly and his next Buckhead project, St. Cecilia (in the former Bluepointe space) on track to open by year's end, chef and restaurateur Ford Fry (No. 246, JCT Kitchen, and the Optimist) begins to turn his focus to his next project: an Austin-style Tex-Mex restaurant in the Krog Street Market. Details are still in the works, but Fry relayed a handful worth sharing.

First Look: Joe Schafer gives us a glimpse into King + Duke’s menu

Ford Fry’s highly anticipated open-hearth cooking restaurant, King and Duke, opens Monday in the space formerly home to Nava in Buckhead. With a 65-seat patio facing Peachtree Street, customized Elijah Craig bourbon labels, and a private dining room hidden by a belted door (see more of that below), this restaurant is drawing attention from all over. Executive chef Joe Schafer spared a few minutes between completing mock dinner service and preparing for today’s Friends and Family lunch to give us a glimpse into King Duke’s menu and more.

The semifinalists for the James Beard Foundation Awards were announced today, and 12 Georgia chefs and restaurants made the cut! Perhaps the most prestigious honor in the culinary industry, the James Beard Awards celebrate restaurateurs, chefs, pastry chefs, bars, and restaurants around the country for outstanding service, food, and beverage programs. Local semifinalists include Cardamom Hill—which was named one of Bon Appetit's 2012 Best New Restaurants in America—for Best New Restaurant, and Bacchanalia's Anne Quatrano for Outstanding Chef.
