What to do, what to eat, and where to stay on Jekyll Island, Sea Island, St. Simons Island, Little St. Simons Island, and Cumberland Island.

For the last quarter century, Brannen Veal has been a staff member at Sea Island, a Forbes Five-Star resort in Georgia’s Golden Isles. Hired as a golf pro in 1996, the Macon native worked his way up to the head pro job before becoming director of golf in 2005.

Many African American families in Georgia have roots in the Sea Islands, often expressed through food that revolves around seafood and rice and okra, which were introduced to the Americas from West Africa during the slave trade.

In a recent Sea Island project, designers Adrian Johnson and Bethany Vann of Johnson Vann Interiors (whose portfolio includes the Sea Island Club itself) crafted a relaxing, cheerful getaway for three generations in this six-bedroom, six-bathroom, Mediterranean-style townhome near the Cloister.

Short of an invitation, the only way to visit the private Sea Island is to book a room at its resort, the Cloister.

These oceanfront residences may just be Sea Island’s sweetest deal. Not only do they offer the convenience and (relative) affordability of shared ownership, but they also include year-round membership in the Sea Island Club for only a quarter of the annual dues—and no initiation fee.

Privately owned Little Hawkins Island comes with a main residence, two guest cottages, and its very own club.
