Shaun Doty is back in the kitchen again, and the only question you might have after dining at the Federal is, “What took so long?” Opening the Federal last November has been his greatest gift yet—to Atlanta and, perhaps, to himself.

James Oxendine passed along this news just now: Shaun Doty's Inman Park restaurant is closing. I'm bummed: We were planning to name Shaun's as Best Brunch in our upcoming Best Of issue. Eat there on a Sunday morning before mid-December to see why. Here's hoping Doty puts chopped liver and duck fat fries on Yeah! Burger's menu. Shaun Doty fries solo

As funny as it is to hear a youthful forty-year-old describe himself as “a product of an earlier era,” I knew exactly what chef Shaun Doty, the owner of Shaun’s in Inman Park, was trying to communicate when we sat down for a chat at Aurora Coffee in Little Five Points. I thought he would be mad at me for starting the conversation by calling him “the king of french fries.” Au contraire! He reminded me that, although he grew up in Oklahoma, he had lived in Belgium, where frying potatoes is an art form, and that he had once been married to a Belgian woman.
