AJC relo?

As media pundits ponder the death knell of the Big City Newspaper, here’s a new wrinkle in the debate: Is a paper a Big City Paper if it’s located outside the city limits?

As Maria Saporta reports in the Atlanta Business Chronicle, among the cost cutting measures under consideration at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution is shuttering the Marietta Street HQ and moving to the suburbs—possibly Gwinnett County where the AJC has production facilities and a suburban bureau.

I hate to sound like yet another old fogey bewailing the demise of newspapers, but the idea of the AJC operating away from the shadow of the Henry Grady statue is harder for me to imagine than the idea of no AJC at all…
