This University is OTP But Lives Rent-Free in Our Heads

You may have heard of UWG (they have 73,000 alumni, so word travels fast), but here are eight things you probably don’t know.

Waiting until you graduate college to launch your career is a 20th-century move. Catch up with this millennium at the University of West Georgia, where you can expect many things: an enriching college experience, life-long friendships, real-world learning opportunities that prepare our students for their careers … We could go on.

But at UWG, you should also expect the unexpected. Here are eight things that’ll surprise you when you Go West.

  1. We’re closer than you think.

UWG’s largest campus in Carrollton is only an hour away from midtown Atlanta (on an average traffic day), and we have campuses in Newnan and Douglasville that are even closer to the capital of the South.

2. We’re laser-focused on creating outcomes for students.

We partner with industry experts to ensure our programs – like the new bachelor’s in computing and master’s in digital and social media – are built to meet the needs and expectations of the careers our students will have after they graduate. UWG is committed to offering high-quality undergraduate, graduate, and community programs – nearly 100 of them – on-campus, off-campus, and online.

3. We’re diverse.

Welcoming students from 34 states outside Georgia and 63 countries outside the U.S., UWG offers a diverse and dynamic community of fellow Wolves. Nearly half of our student body identify as persons of color, and our value of inclusiveness is evident in our commitment to celebrating our diversity and our collaborative spirit in the movement for social change and social justice.

4. We’re a community of champions.

Our UWG Athletics teams compete as part of the Gulf South Conference in more than a dozen sports, winning multiple conference championships and appearing in the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament in recent years. But UWG Cheerleading goes one step further, competing at the Division I level – and bringing 28 (twenty-eight!) UCA National Championships home since 2001. How’s that for a tradition of excellence?

5. We’re big (and small).

Nestled among the pines on a picturesque 645 acres, UWG empowers more than 12,700 students to Go West through academic engagement, supportive services, professional development, and a caring, student-centered community. The communities we serve offer students, faculty, and staff the best of both worlds, boasting top-tier recreational amenities to keep their citizens healthy, active, and engaged in small-town settings.

6. We’re supportive every step of the way.

Speaking of supportive, we believe the only challenging thing about college is what happens in the classroom (and even that’s less of a challenge, with an average faculty-to-student ratio of only 19:1). Whether it’s registering for classes, making sure your financial aid is locked in, or knowing what textbook you need for class – we help you each step of the way so you can maintain your momentum toward graduation.

7. We’re overwhelmingly female.

Who runs UWG? Girls. Nearly 70 percent of our current students identify as female, and as a university culture, we empower women to be their true, authentic selves in a supportive community.

8. We’re animal lovers.

We offer the only pet-friendly residence hall in the University System of Georgia, so you no longer have to leave your beloved dog or cat at home when you go to college. And they can be rewarded for their hard work, too; we’ve conferred two honorary dog-rees since 2020.

Come see yourself at UWG – where you can discover the unexpected where you’re expected.
