Mayor Reed and APD kick off public safety forums

About a month ago, my neighbor’s Jeep Cherokee was stolen. In the annals of city crime, this is hardly a noteworthy theft. Except that I live in a gated loft development with on-site security. And that said Jeep then was used in an attempted burglary; apparently such twin misdeeds—stealing SUVs and using them to haul off stolen stuff—are a trend this summer, according to the cops who responded to my neighbor's complaint. Also, I should mention it was the second time this particular Jeep has been swiped and that a couple months ago someone was carjacked at gunpoint in the same gated lot.

What are you doing this weekend? December 6 – 8

Apparently ’tis the season of organized strolls—and runs. December’s arrival brings hot cocoa, festive light displays, and organized walks through other people’s homes. And given the crazy weather of the past week, it’s good to know that not all these events are outdoors.

2014 will be big for downtown

A.J. Robinson, the president of Central Atlanta Progress, this morning said the current “surge of activity” in downtown Atlanta is unlike anything the city has seen in decades.

The wizards of Cobb finally speak on Braves deal

When the Braves announced their move to the burbs on Monday, there was plenty of vocal vitriol from ITPers. But there was surprisingly little celebrating, let alone gloating, from the people of Cobb County. That low grumble you heard instead was the angry muttering and collective unsettling of suburbanite stomachs of a tax base left to wonder where the hell Cobb’s share of the money for the new stadium was going to come from. And Cobb officials were saying nothing to salve the dyspepsia.

The Braves asked for an awful lot-and Cobb is evidently prepared to give it

You can dig into the twenty-page acronym-loaded MOU - or "Memo of Understanding" - between the Braves and Cobb County at your leisure (here's the pdf) but here’s the main takeaway: the Braves asked for lots of control and they’ve been promised it in a sweetheart of a deal that would run through the 2046 baseball season.

What are you doing this weekend? November 1-3

As you might have observed, we’re a little Walking Dead obsessed of late. Join other TWD obsessives at Walker Stalker, the first convention created in honor of Atlanta’s favorite zombies. Show stars—including Steven Yeun (Glenn), Melissa McBride (Carol), Scott Wilson (Hershel), Andrew Lincoln (Rick), and Norman Reedus (Daryl)—will be on hand. The panel discussions range from cerebral (“Zombie Ethics” with Emory profs) to squishy (“How to Paint and Apply Foam Latex Zombie Prosthetics”). Stop by our booth and say hi. (And while you're there, enter to win an autographed blow-up of one of our covers.) Friday, Saturday, Sunday. walkerstalkercon.com

What are you doing this weekend? November 15 – 17

We’ve got a few suggestions for things to do to remind yourself that the city really is a great place to be—no matter what our home team thinks.

You can’t ride the Atlanta Streetcar yet. But you can run a 5K along the track

If everything had gone according to schedule, we’d all have been riding the Atlanta Streetcar for months now. While the start date for the light rail system is still uncertain, the track, stops, and other infrastructural elements are in place. To promote the (eventual) launch of the system, the City of Atlanta and Central Atlanta Progress are hosting a 5K race along the route this Saturday. The race is sponsored by Siemens, the manufacturer of the streetcars that will (eventually) glide through downtown Atlanta.

Best fan suggestions (so far) for a new Braves logo

So, it's been just over a week since the Atlanta Braves announced their intentions to move to Cobb County. Reporters have been furiously filing open records requests, politicians have been spinning their positions, and the team's attempting a PR offensive. Meanwhile, some fans are taking to a form of art therapy.

What are you doing this weekend? October 18-20

This is a great weekend to be a patron of the arts—and party while doing so. From the newly renovated Atlanta Contemporary Arts Center to installations in downtown Atlanta to an exhibit by upcoming talents, there’s plenty to pick from.
