Capra Gia: Same guy, same goats, new outlook

If the faces behind the new Capra Gia goat cheese stand at your farmers market look familiar—and if the cheese tastes deliciously familiar, too—you may be experiencing Coles Lake déjà vu.Mark Stevens, cheesemaker for the now defunct Coles Lake Dairy, is back in business with a new group of partners, some of whom worked with him at Coles Lake. The new business, Capra Gia Cheese Company, is the same but different—which makes perfect sense, when you consider that Stevens himself says that he left but never did.

Farmers markets 2.0? Maybe so

When East Atlanta Farmers Market opens Thursday, and when the new Grant Park Farmers Market opens May 15, there will be much rejoicing over all the good food and fun. But even more interesting is what’s going on behind the scenes.

Atlanta loves CSAs

Community Supported
Agriculture (CSA) is the gawky term for a feel-good undertaking: Members purchase a subscription “share” in a farm, and then at weekly pickup locations they receive boxes—or bags, or baskets—of just-harvested produce and sometimes other staples, including eggs, cheese, or meat.

If you don’t love eggplant, please try harder

A few weeks ago I happened upon a startling discovery: Some of my favorite area farmers do not care for eggplant. They grow it; they sell it. Apparently, though, they don’t eat it.

Marietta offers lazier Sunday market, too

Marietta Square has long hosted one of the biggest, most bustling Saturday farmers markets in metro Atlanta. This summer, it’s also been quietly holding a second market with an entirely different—but still very likeable—vibe.

Southern Chef’s Potluck raises $50,000 for Wholesome Wave

The third annual Southern Chef's Potluck returned to the bucolic grounds of Serenbe yesterday. The sold-out crowd lined up for heaping plates of barbecue chicken, tomato pie, watermelon salad, cornbread, pickled okra, squash casserole and so on while keeping cool with cocktail-filled mason jars. In the distance, the goats and chickens of Serenbe lounged in the shade. A few bands from Atlanta played tunes for the crowd before the real main event: an auction to benefit Wholesome Wave Georgia. When the day ended, the event had raised more than $50,000 for the organization.

Opening Soon: The Yogurt Tap

Walking around in downtown Decatur on a recent blazing hot July afternoon, I made a beeline when I spotted signage for The Yogurt Tap, a new frozen yogurt shop that Micropundit put on my radar a couple of weeks ago. Sadly, there was still butcher paper up on the windows in the former Houseworks space on Church street, and I peeked inside to find a contractor hard at work on the unfinished space.

Sex on wheels: A food truck coming to Atlanta?

Food trucks were one of 2009’s hottest food trends—in other cities. Ventures such as Korean taco sensation Kogi barbecue in Los Angeles and Washington DC’s Sweetflow frozen-yogurt-stand-on-wheels have captured fans and dollars. If local entrepreneur Andrew Capron can secure a license, Atlanta may see his barbecue truck with a racy name on the streets by mid-spring 2010.

Reservations Required: Atlanta Food Events, July 23-29, Tomato Prix-Fixe at Haven, Sockeye Salmon Dinner at Canoe, Peg Leg Porker at Fox Bros.

All-You-Can-Eat Pizza at Alon’s in Dunwoody on Mon., July 23 Alon’s Bakery & Market in Dunwoody recently installed a new wood burning pizza oven and now offers weekly all-you-can-eat pizza nights from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Monday. The cost is $12 per adult and free for children four and younger.

Cheese of the Week: Torta La Serena

“Hmm, this tastes like medical supplies.”You never quite know with food writers, but a fellow journalist made this comment the other night when we tasted Torta La Serena at a restaurant, and I think she meant the remark to convey something between admiration and skepticism. La Serena is distinctive, no doubt—but I’m partial to its distinctiveness.
