When I stopped by the other day, downtown Atlanta’s Metro Mall seemed to have fallen into darkness. The power was out—something about a small fire in a fuse box—though nobody seemed to notice, or at least not to care that much. Vendors used flashlights to set up shop, a customer bought jewelry by candlelight. Just another day at Atlanta’s most famous mall (at least by social-media metrics of fame).

I don't know about you; but I spend half of each Walking Dead episode squinting at the scenery trying to figure out exactly where in metro Atlanta—aka zombie capital of the USA—that particular zombie gut spill occurred. Broadcast from the Bluff: Atlanta’s open-air heroin supermarket
After WABE-FM reporter and weekend anchor Jim Burress finished grabbing sound for Stuck in The Bluff: AIDS, Heroin and One Group’s Illegal Quest to Save Lives, a 30-minute documentary that airs tonight, he drove home, crawled into bed and stared at the ceiling for hours. “I could not wrap my head around everything that I saw,” he recalls of his day chronicling the work of the nonprofit Atlanta Harm Reduction Coalition’s needle exchange program. “There’s the drug use and the drug sales, the nonprofit doing this work and the neighborhood itself. Spending time there forces you to ask: ‘Is this a forgotten land? Are these people basically being sentenced to a neighborhood like this because that’s the easiest solution?’ No matter what side of this issue you fall on, you’re going to be challenged as a listener hearing the stories of these people. This is a deep, complex and troubling issue.”
Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul loves us!!!!!
Life right now is kind of like a countdown to the premiere of the final season of "Breaking Bad" on August 11. But some Atlantans haven't had to wait that long for a glimpse of Aaron Paul (who plays the show's meth-addled but loveable Jesse Pinkman), who's been in town filming a movie about fast cars called "Need for Speed."
Fox 5 anchor Amanda Davis’ weird, sad exit
Looking red carpet ready in a red dress and matching lipstick, Davis, standing in front of the anchor desk, smiled and told viewers: "I have seen and heard and reported on stories from Bankhead to Buckhead to the White House. As B98.5-FM morning show host Vikki Locke clicks off the microphone for the last time this morning after a 28-year run on Atlanta’s airwaves, she’s leaving behind a radio industry much different than the one she entered as an Ohio State University journalism graduate back in 1985. During her nearly 20-year reign at Star 94 with partner Steve McCoy, you could invite a superstar listener like Elton John, who lived down the street from the station, on air for an extended chat and to spin his favorite songs. In 2013, morning show talent is advised to keep the chatter to under two minutes, edit your interviews in advance and spin Train’s “Hey, Soul Sister” ad nauseam.
