Our Place in the Universe: Dead last in per-capita state tax revenue

As my fellow blogger Andisheh Nouraee pointed out yesterday, Tea Party types will never come around to the proposed transportation sales tax (to say nothing of "taxis, taxidermy, and tacks"). But really, they should lighten up a bit.

The world’s tiniest Walmart opens in Atlanta

Walmart made retail history today by opening its smallest store ever. While a tiny Walmart—the store near Georgia Tech's campus is around 2,500 square feet—seems like an oxymoron, don’t let the size fool you.

Infographic of the Day: How liberal is Atlanta?

Politics can be a touchy subject in Atlanta, a city long known as a blue dot in a solidly red state. It can be so touchy that some people don’t even want to talk...

Metro Atlanta No. 19 for Hispanic population

The numbers crunchers at Pew have a new report—with nifty interactive maps—that analyzes the U.S. Hispanic population by state and metro area. In short, the project shows that although Hispanics still cluster in a few areas (nine percent of the nation’s Hispanic population is in the Los Angeles metro area, for example) over the past decade, Hispanics are moving to other parts of the country.

The best place to live in Georgia is . . . Canton?

While the folks at the real estate blog Movoto.com think Atlanta excels in nerdiness and redneckery, they’ve concocted a new list where, oddly enough, the city doesn’t place at all. Movoto’s “10 Best Places in Georgia” roster doesn’t include the state’s capital.  That’s right; Atlanta evidently doesn’t rate. The most peachy keen of Georgia’s places to live is none other than (drum roll, please) Canton.

Movoto’s explanation: a data-and-statistics-based formula used to identify real estate Utopias by ranking total amenities, crime, tax rates, employment, commute time, and weather (uh, humid). The rankings don’t include access to mass transit, but do include a multifaceted “quality of life” tabulation that assesses the cost of living, median home price, median rent, median household income, and student-to-teacher ratio in public schools.

Movoto’s List of the Best Places in Georgia

Once again, Atlanta is ranked No. 1 for income inequality

The richest Atlanta households earn almost 20 times more than the city’s poorest residents: $288,159 compared to $14,988.

Report: Atlanta is the most sprawling big metro in the U.S.

The study examined the correlation between sprawl and economic mobility. People who live in high-sprawl metro areas have lower rates of economic opportunity than those who live in more densely developed cities. “A low income person in a compact area has much better access to jobs,” said lead research Reid Ewing.

Atlanta: Most redneck city in the USA?

Consider, as they say, the source. The same folks over at the Movoto real estate blog who recently decreed Atlanta the most nerdy city in the U.S. have now dubbed us "most redneck."

The redneck-calculation methodology developed by Movoto's Natalie Grigson includes: percentage of high school dropouts; number of gun stores, taxidermists, Walmarts, country music stations, and Western gear vendors; and proximity to a NASCAR track. Also lawn mower repair stores.

Alright, Natalie. We'll concede on most of the findings—especially the guns and dropouts. But did you have to make a Jeff Foxworthy reference? We'd have gone with the Stone Mountain laser show.
Atlanta drivers least safe Allstate report

Of 200 biggest U.S. cities, Atlanta is the 15th least safe to drive in, says Allstate

Just before Labor Day weekend, Allstate insurance released its annual report of America's Best Drivers. In a result that should surprise exactly zero Atlantans, our city ranked 186 out of the top 200 most populated U.S. cities.

Study: Georgia is the most expensive place to own a car

We all love to hate Atlanta traffic. We like to whine (okay, kind of boast) about how it’s the worst in the country. Well, practice your whining some more: our list of auto-related woes still just got a lot longer.
