If you’ve been to a Waffle House lately, you might have noticed that something is different: The old analog jukeboxes have been swapped out for newfangled digital ones. Waffle House purists like me were sad to see them go—despite a newfound ability to subject fellow diners to obscure college fight songs at the touch of a screen. But earlier this month, with the email announcement of the first-ever Great Waffle House Jukebox Auction, I changed my tune: Now was my chance to fulfill a longtime dream and get a classic Waffle House jukebox of my very own.

Ponce City Market announces its first restaurants
Ponce City Market has announced the first batch of vendors set to open in its Central Food Hall. Dub’s Fish Camp (Anne Quatrano), H&F Burger (Linton Hopkins), Jia, Honeysuckle Gelato, and Simply Seoul Kitchen (Hannah Chung and Grace Lee) will open in one of the largest brick structures in the Southeast. Openings will be staggered: Dub’s, H&F, Honeysuckle, and Simply Seoul are aiming for spring 2015 and Jia is aiming for winter 2014.
One last voyage for Dante’s Down the Hatch?
This week, as longtime employees stopped by to pick up their final checks and his phone continued to ring off the hook, a full week after Dante’s Down the Hatch officially closed, the landmark Buckhead fondue and jazz emporium’s owner Dante Stephensen faced some difficult decisions. With a wrecking ball tentatively set to begin swinging at his 43-year-old business at 3380 Peachtree Road on October 31 and representatives at Ahlers & Ogletree Auction Gallery eager to auction off everything from the vintage autos parked out back to the last Dante’s daiquiri cocktail glass on September 21, the 77-year-old restaurateur has to figure out his future — and fast.
Rathbun’s announces Nick Anderson as chef de cuisine
When Rathbun’s reopens in late September or early October, it will not only have a new kitchen, but new menu items and a “new” chef. True, chef de cuisine Nick Anderson has been in the role since last December, but chef-owner Kevin Rathbun and his team are taking the remodel as an opportunity to publicize Anderson’s work.

Scheduled to open October 14 for dinner and October 20 for lunch, Gypsy Kitchen will focus on Spanish-inspired shared plates created by executive chef Randy Lewis.
Umi to open in April in Buckhead
In late 2011, Atlanta lost not one, but two of its most heralded sushi restaurants when the Kinjos brothers (Chris and Alex) closed MF Sushibar and MF Buckhead. Now, Farshid Arshid and Charlie Hendon—both frequent patrons of the MF restaurants—are hoping to bring back the same level of style and sushi with their new restaurant, Umi. Former MF Buckhead executive chef Fuyuhiko Ito will lead the kitchen, and Ito’s wife, Lisa Matsuoka Ito, will be the pastry chef.
Former Antico pizza-maker to open Varuni-Napoli in early April
The pizza-maker who broke off from Antico and started his own restaurant will open Varuni-Napoli on Monroe Drive in Midtown the first week in April. Owner Luca Varuni says the fast-casual restaurant, which awaits its final inspection, will offer pizza and Italian street food made with ingredients imported from Naples.
Watershed on Peachtree to serve its famous fried chicken for lunch on Wednesdays
Today at 11:30 a.m., Watershed on Peachtree will serve its lauded fried chicken to a lunch crowd for the first time. The saltwater and buttermilk-brined bird has previously only been available on Wednesdays at dinner, often selling out before 7:30 p.m. Now, executive chef Joe Truex is broadening this window to include Wednesday lunch service.
