Knoxville-based Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop is opening a Sandy Springs outpost November 1. Located in the new Sandy Springs Gateway complex at 4600 Roswell Road, Buttermilk Sky will offer nine pies a day, including their signature Southern Buttermilk. “We cater to the Southern pie—the things you grew up on,” says Meredith Layton, who founded Buttermilk Sky with her husband Scott. “Everything is made in house daily, but we really pride ourselves on our crust.”

A majority of the recipes come from the Laytons’ grandmothers. Offerings will rotate, except for classics like Nanny’s Pecan, Granny’s Apple, and Chocolate Meringue, along with two seasonal pies, like Summer Peach and Edisto Key Lime. Pies comes in two sizes: individual (4 inches) and large (9 inches). All pies will be available a la mode. Patrons can even get a mini pie hand-mixed with ice cream with a coffee pairing.

Buttermilk Sky will feature a “Garden & Gun-style décor” with subway tile and rustic wood finishings. Patrons will order at the counter and then either sit at the patio or at the pie bar where they can watch the kitchen work. Artisan pantry and kitchen items, including rolling pins, pie servers, aprons, cookbooks, candles, mugs, and pie plates, will also be for sale. “We have family in Atlanta and have grown up spending quite a bit of time there. It was a natural fit for our first franchised location to be built there in the heart of the South,” Layton says.
