Three years ago, Melissa Rudd was making donuts in her garage and handing out samples to passing neighbors. Now, she runs two design-your-own doughnut shops in Alpharetta and Sandy Springs and is helping launch the company’s first franchise location this fall in Dunwoody. Located at 1447 Dunwoody Village Parkway, the shop will have a design-your-own-doughnut station, where customers can choose from different toppings to create their own flavors. They will also offer pre-made combinations such as cannoli, dulce de leche, and raspberry lemonade, as well as coffee and tea.

“We had franchising in the back of our mind when we started two and half years ago,” Rudd says. “Now, we have everything streamlined, and we’ve worked out all the kinks.”

Her first franchisee, Ryan Boon, came into Da Vinci’s Donuts at least once a week. “I started coming in here with my kid, because he loved the interactive component,” he says. “We felt like we were part of this community.” When Rudd announced her decision to start franchising, he leapt at the opportunity. Boon worked closely with Rudd to find a new location, but finally decided that he wanted to open close to home. “We looked at lots of different plots, but we always came back to Dunwoody,” Boon says, adding that he wanted to help give back to the local community. “We needed to be invested where we lived.
