Downtown Duluth is on a roll. Following the openings of O4W Pizza and Dreamland BBQ, Piatto’s Fresh Kitchen will open in July at 3140 Main Street. Owners Raj Mittal and his wife, Anu, spent almost two decades working in Italian and Mediterranean restaurants and, alongside chef Morey Anderson, will focus on “fresh and healthy” Italian dishes. They plan to serve wood-fired pizza, fresh pasta, and dishes such as risotto crab cakes, and potato chips with gorgonzola and pancetta. There will also be a to-go window, with a display case featuring sandwiches, salads, and desserts. The 4800-square foot restaurant will feature an outdoor patio, a downstairs bar, and a kids play area. “I have a young kid so I understand how hard it can be to go out,” Raj says. “I wanted to have an area where the kids can play so parents can enjoy their dinner.”

Raj originally wanted to open in Midtown, but after searching for months without progress, he decided to look elsewhere. He felt drawn to Duluth because of the annual fall festival, the developing area, and the warm reception he got when he moved to the area. “The local communities and the City of Duluth have been very helpful,” he says. “When we moved here from another country [Australia] we needed some guidance, and they’ve been a great help to us.”
