Atlanta Student Movement - March 1, 2010 The original March 9, 1960 Appeal ad ran in the Atlanta Constitution, Atlanta Journal, and Atlanta Daily World. It later ran in the New York Times. The protests started by the students in March 1960 triggered an almost two-year standoff between segregationists and civil rights activists. This LOOK magazine article is from April 1961. During the holiday shopping season, the boycott of downtown shops and restaurants was in full swing. An adult committee supported the student efforts and distributed these fliers citywide. The Atlanta Inquirer was launched as part of the Student Movement. Another flier distributed as part of the holiday season boycotts. This was in the archives of Atlanta Life Insurance, which actively supported the boycott and other civil rights efforts. Downtown, Lenox Square, and Belvedere Plaza were the targets of a holiday-season boycott. Local businesses like Frazier’s Cafe Society and Paschal’s joined churches and Atlanta Life in support of the students. An adult committee was formed to support the student efforts, announced in this May 1960 editorial in the Atlanta Daily World.
