The Bishop

Downtown Avondale Estates’ Tudor Village has long been embroiled in bankruptcy, but it’s showing new signs of growth with the opening of this handsome neighborhood tavern. Serving wines on tap and a comfortable Southern menu helmed by chef Robert Barth, the Bishop crafts a fine picnic spread of rosy slices of Gum Creek country ham, pimento cheese topped with bacon jam, and delicious pepper jelly with cream cheese and buttered club crackers. You can carry on with heavier plates like the smoked fried chicken and French dip sliders, but a glass of rosé and a plucky lobster Cobb salad best capture the space’s neighborhood charm.
