Georgia Urology: Leading the Charge in BPH Treatment
It is estimated that almost 40 million men in the United States have BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia), a noncancerous growth of the prostate which can significantly impact a man’s ability to empty his bladder and his quality of life.
BPH is the number one reason why men visit my office. Over the years, many different treatment options for this issue have ranged from medications to surgical removal of the prostate. The newest therapy is called Aquablation from Procept BioRobotics, a unique, minimally invasive option that uses a robot to deliver a high-pressure water jet within the prostate tissue to create a large channel through which urine can flow more easily. Each case is customized to the exact shape of the patient’s prostate anatomy using real-time, multidimensional imaging.
Aquablation is clinically proven to be both safer and as effective in relieving symptoms as transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), which has been considered one of the gold standards of treatment for many years. It is FDA-approved and provides some distinct advantages over traditional surgical therapies.
As the first surgeon in Georgia to perform Aquablation, I’ve learned most prostates, regardless of size, are amenable to Aquablation. One significant advantage of Aquablation is there are fewer sexual side effects using this technology when compared to all other types of surgical removal of the prostate.
My colleagues at Georgia Urology and I have performed more than 50 Aquablation cases. We have been very impressed with the versatility of the system as well as the significant and safe symptom relief seen by our patients. Additionally, Aquablation allows for personalized treatment of each patient with physician-supervised robotic precision. It’s a very nice option for patients considering BPH treatments.

Wellstar: High-Tech Healthcare in Your Neighborhood
The most advanced medical technology is right here in metro Atlanta—and it’s at Wellstar. You may have stopped at a convenient Wellstar Urgent Care location or passed one of the hundreds of medical practices on your way to work, but that’s just the start of the possibilities. Wellstar has the technology to take your care to the next level, whether you’re dealing with a new diagnosis, a chronic illness, or being rushed into emergency surgery.
Every day, Wellstar provides state-of-the-art treatments for people like Zac. After suffering a traumatic fall from the roof of his parents’ home, he almost didn’t make it. But his Wellstar care team acted fast to save his life. Then, when his respiratory system went into distress, Zac was treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) to reoxygenate his blood, circulating it in and out of his body—and saving his life once again.
Wellstar offers new advancements for breast cancer patients like Nan. Less than five miles from her home, she received intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT), a groundbreaking procedure that delivers concentrated radiation in a single dose during surgery. For Nan, that meant getting back to her law practice and skipping weeks of time-consuming radiation appointments.
For stroke survivors like Ashley (pictured), Wellstar’s quality and compassionate care made all the difference in her treatment and recovery. To relieve swelling in her brain after a stroke, she had part of her skull removed and stored in her abdomen to preserve it. Six months later, her skull was perfectly reattached. Today, she gets to experience a different kind of challenge: becoming a mother to her newborn son, Luke.
Investing in new technology means investing in you. That’s why at Wellstar, it’s about more than healthcare. It’s PeopleCare.
