When a manufacturer discontinues a fabric style, typically the upholstery samples get tossed in the trash. Not at Decatur’s Trinity Mercantile and Design Co., where beautiful damasks, fine silks, and woven jacquards are upcycled into elegant reusable totes for shoppers in the store. To produce the bags, the home furnishings shop and full-service interior design studio partnered with nearby nonprofit Re:Loom, which trains homeless and low-income individuals to become skilled weavers on traditional looms. Each one-of-a-kind bag is handmade, and a beautiful fabric gets a new life. trinity-decatur.com
