Atlanta Orthodontic Specialists

Atlanta Orthodontic Specialists (AOS) is one of the most admired group practices in the United States. Dr. Michael Stewart founded the practice in 1977. Over the years, it has grown with the addition of three of his Emory-trained residents, Drs. Melisa Rathburn, Kent Starling, and Mark Sanchez. Most recently, the next generation, Drs. Christopher Brady and Tyler Rathburn, have joined the practice.

AOS currently serves four regions of the city: Sandy Springs, Buckhead, Virginia-Highland, and College Park. Because their diagnostic, treatment, and practice management systems are all digital and cloud-based, all four offices operate on a common platform, allowing seamless integration of all four locations and six doctors.

AOS was the first to offer Invisalign in Atlanta in 1998 and SureSmile in 2004. Both are 3D digital treatment systems that provide the highest levels of precision and efficiency in orthodontic treatment. The doctors of AOS have inspired and trained many other orthodontists in the application of these technologies locally, nationally, and internationally.

The most exciting of these is SureSmile, which allows the doctor to design the desired outcome in 3D (CAD) and deliver the result through the use of robotically manufactured orthodontic arch wires (CAM). In most cases, this creates a much better outcome with a reduction in treatment time of 30 to 50 percent.

Early in 2016, AOS opened its collaborative learning center, the AOS Studio. It serves as a regional center of learning for advanced dental education and a gathering place for numerous study clubs in the Atlanta area. In fact, all orthodontic practices in North America who adopt the SureSmile technology receive their training in the AOS Studio. There are also international study clubs from Europe, Australia, and New Zealand who have twice visited for advanced instruction and will be returning in 2020.

In January of 2017, the studio was dedicated to the memory of three Atlanta orthodontists who were giants of the last generation: Drs. Ike Rolader, Walt Sheffield, and Charlie Smith. All three men served the community and were inspirational to the doctors of AOS

Despite their wide-reaching ties in the international orthodontic community, the doctors of AOS remain committed to local service and engagement. AOS provides generous support to many schools and parent organizations in its communities.
