Coming Up: Dooley & Daisies

Vince Dooley

Vince Dooley, the honorary chair of the 2011 Southeastern Flower Show, will hold court at the opening night party on February 24 at the Cobb Galleria Centre. Dooley has some sage advice for beginning gardeners: “It’s important to divide up the household responsibilities,” says the legendary University of Georgia football coach turned horticulture hobbyist. “[Wife] Barbara is in charge of domestic affairs—that’s everything inside the house. And I’m in charge of foreign affairs—that’s everything outside.”

Dooley has recently turned his passion into a book, Vince Dooley’s Garden, with paintings by Atlanta artist Steve Penley. “Gardening is my golf,” he says, admitting that his lush Athens acreage is the envy of his neighbors. In addition to meeting Dooley, opening night attendees will get to preview the show’s blue-ribbon floral designs and Tiny Trees: The Bonsai Exhibition and will have a chance to talk with bonsai master Kenji Miyata and his wife. (They’ll be the ones dressed in formal kimonos.)
The Southeastern Flower Show runs February 25 to 27; opening night tickets are $125. For tickets and information, visit sehort.org.
