A new version of a long-established program to teach math is now in place at the Howard School. Teachers have been using the Singapore Math system, which uses concrete objects that can be manipulated (as opposed to memorization and worksheets) to help students with language-processing issues work through mathematical concepts. The school has now adopted the latest American version of the program to make it easier for students to master concepts more quickly. Dr. Tara Terry, the lower- and middle-school principal, says the school selected the program due to its use of standard American language. “The other program was not using U.S. English, which made it difficult for some of our kids to understand, especially if they have certain learning disabilities,” she says. howardschool.org
