The Atlanta Braves are moving to Cobb County and everyone is kind of stunned

For more than half a century, the Atlanta Braves have rented a prime chunk of property just south of Downtown. To accommodate this prized tenant, city and county officials have demolished entire blocks, proffered tax breaks, rerouted roads, and constructed not one but two massive stadiums. It’s not been enough. Today the Braves announced they will leave Atlanta proper – and move twelve miles up the freeway to Cobb County, hosting opening day 2017 in a brand new ballpark.

Will the Waffle House luck hold for a 13th Atlanta Braves win?

You can find some pretty strange lucky charms when it comes to sports—Michael Jordan’s old college shorts, the St. Louis Squirrel, Les Miles eating grass—but a lucky Waffle House? The Braves have gone 12-0 since a scaled-down version of the Atlanta-based breakfast icon opened at Turner Field.
The Other 284 Days Turner Field

The Other 284 Days

The story of Turner Field and its neighbors is one of stunted vision, cynical opportunism, halfhearted reform efforts, and misguided renewal schemes. Millions of dollars have been squandered and hundreds of acres left vacant. We were so showered with love and self-serving praise that you almost expected, say, a Boston sports fan to leave behind his seven titles in the last twelve years so he could come down and buy season tickets to half-empty Turner Field.

Forbes: Atlanta’s more miserable than Poughkeepsie, less than Detroit

So, according to the numbers-crunchers at Forbes, metro Atlanta is the sixteenth most miserable city in the country. Civic boosters should probably be thankful that the magazine dropped two of its misfortune indicators—pro sports and political corruption.

Tweets of the Day: September 28, 2012—Chipper Jones Edition

The Braves will honor the ostensible future Hall of Famer before tonight's Mets game. Here's how fans (and Chipper himself) feel about his retirement:

Braves wives seeking Christmas spirit at Turner Field today, Thursday

Sure, the temps will be hovering in the 90s this afternoon when Turner Field opens for business with the Arizona Diamondbacks but the spouses of the Atlanta Braves will be in full-on holiday mode. The Braves wives, including Kim Hudson, Tim Hudson's missus, will be out in force taking up fan donations of new unwrapped toys (minimum value is $10) for the team's upcoming Christmas in July visit to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta next month.
