The Benoit siblings opened the the Vortex when Michael was 30, Hank was 35, and Suzanne was 42. None of the siblings had worked in the restaurant industry before, and they weren’t from Georgia, either. But they opened, and stayed open.

“It’s an elevated pub—the nighttime version of a unique coffeehouse,” says owner Jim Sullivan of the new Midtown bar opening in the former Cosmopolitan space.

“When partygoers make it into a kitchen, they tend to never leave,” says interior designer Courtney Giles Decker. To route guests elsewhere in her own home, she turned a hallway into a bar, drawing people into a space fully stocked for cocktail hour.

We knew this day was coming; now the date is finally on the calendar. On December 27, the Sunday after Christmas, Manuel's Tavern will shut down to begin the long-overdue process of renovating the building it's occupied since 1956.

Drinks are stiff, and the crowd at the bar is usually pretty sparse until after 10.
