Wood’s Chapel BBQ will bring Cue-bano sandwiches and Cheerwine whiskey slushies to Summerhill this spring
Wood’s Chapel BBQ—the hotly anticipated joint from the team behind the General Muir and Fred's Meat & Bread—is set to open this May in fast-growing Summerhill.
It took 18 years for Jennifer Johnson and her husband, Ben, to determine exactly how they should update their historic Virginia-Highland house. They both started their careers as attorneys, and, according to Jennifer, the decision to open restaurants (which include the General Muir, West Egg Cafe, the Canteen, Fred’s Meat & Bread, and Yalla) was just as carefully considered.
When Krog Street Market opens later this summer, Todd Ginsberg of the General Muir will have not one but two restaurants inside. Along with partners Ben and Jennifer Johnson and Shelley Sweet, Ginsberg will operate a sandwich counter service, Fred’s Meat & Bread, and an Israeli-themed restaurant, Yalla.
Set to open in March in the Krog Street Market, Fred’s Meat & Bread will be the newest eatery by the General Muir team, chef Todd Ginsberg, Shelley Sweet, and Ben and Jennifer Johnson. Jonah Merrell, previously of Bacchanalia and Star Provisions, will be chef de cuisine. The 600-square-foot counter service restaurant will offer burgers, fries, and sandwiches, including po’ boys, cheesesteaks, and banh mi, with with meals averaging $10 or less.
At a media preview Tuesday afternoon, Kevin Ouzts of Spotted Trotter announced that his first restaurant, The Cockentrice, will open in the KSM market.
Yesterday, Westside restaurant Bocado announced that chef Todd Ginsberg would be leaving the restaurant on October 20. Rumors have been circulating for months now that Ginsberg would be opening a Jewish deli with Jennifer and Ben Johnson, owners of West Egg, and Ginsberg has finally confirmed his involvement in the project. The General Muir, slated to open in Emory Point by the end of 2012, was announced earlier this year with a press release that promised, "traditional deli classics, such as pastrami and corned beef, chopped liver, smoked fish, and hand-rolled kettle-boiled bagels, as well as innovative takes on traditional dishes."
