Cafe + Velo owners Jeff Demetriou (an Atlanta artist and cyclist) and Benjamin Boisson (owner of Atlanta Beltline Bikes) want you to drive your car less. The duo opened a cozy, unpretentious coffee shop on Edgewood in hopes that it would appeal to Atlanta's cycling and pedestrian community.
340 residents have signed up for the mostly free program, which launched last September. The fleet of bikes—managed by Zagster, a Massachusetts-based vendor, and tracked by antitheft geofencing technology—is spread among four stations that operate like kiosks; each one is near the city’s 12-mile network of multiuse trails.
I’ve been riding to and from work several days per week since May. Everything they tell you about the benefits of cycle commuting is true: I’ve lost eleven pounds, my back and neck are no longer stiff at the end of the workday, my posture has improved, my resting heart rate has dropped, and I’m saving gas money. Oh, and chicks dig it. And by chicks, I mean my four- and one-year-old daughters, who cheer when they see me on a bike.
