A mother of six and a grandmother, Kathy Carpenter spends a lot of her time in the kitchen, cooking and baking. About seven years ago, she started working at Casseroles, a shop selling take-and-bake meals in Morningside. She’d often make sweet treats for the shop, and when the pandemic hit in 2020, her baking rose in correlation with her spare time.

The Dessert Place has been officially revived by Marisa Meddin, the daughter and goddaughter, respectively, of owners Sheryl Meddin and Bennett Frisch. Meddin restarted their business by remaking one of their most popular items: the cream cheese brownie.

Backstory: I debated between taking oatmeal cookies or brownies to a potluck where both kids and grown-ups would be present. Then I stumbled across this recipe in the Best Loved and Brand New Joy of Cooking 75^th Anniversary edition, which combines the best of both.  An oatmeal cookie dough forms the crust for these bar cookies, which is then topped with a thick layer of fudgy frosting.  Then you drop dollops of the remaining dough on top, which forms a crunchy, cobbled surface when baked.
